The course is interactive and participants are encouraged to share examples from their own experience and to learn by networking with colleagues from other countries.

  Goals

During the course, participants are expected to acquire knowledge and skills: The procedures and practices of three-line and two-line hybrid rice breeding. Cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility (CMS) and thermosensitive-genetic male sterility (TGMS) systems. Heredity mechanism and utilization of heterosis. Identification/development and evaluation of CMS, and maintainer and restorer lines for CMS and TGMS lines. Principles and practices involved in hybrid rice seed production. Purification technology for male-sterile line, maintainer line, restorer line. Practice of evaluation in observation-, preliminary-, and advance-yield trials in China and the conduct of hybrid rice yield trials.

  Duration

  Six weeks

  Course Content

  UnitⅠHybrid Rice Breeding

Basic principles and procedures for breeding of three-line hybrid rice Heredity mechanism and utilization of heterosis Breeding principles and practice of two-line hybrid rice Breeding of hybrid rice using marker-assisted selection

   UnitⅡHybrid Rice Seed Production

Summary of utilization of rice heterosis Cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility (CMS) and thermosensitive-genetic male sterility (TGMS) systems Principles and practices involved in hybrid rice seed production Purification technology for male-sterile line, maintainer line, restorer line

   Unit Ⅲ Super Rice Breeding

Advances of super rice breeding programs in China Development of ideal plant type of super rice Genetics of yield factor and plant type factor Application of molecular marker technology to breeding of super rice

   Methodology

The course is a combination of classroom-based lectures, practical work, hands-on exercises and interactions with farmers and group discussions with emphasis on practical exercises in the field. Participants will learn about the scientific approach of hybrid rice breeding, biotechnologies and CMS/TGMS systems, important seed production techniques and genetics of yield factors. They will carry out exercises to understand the decision making of farmers.

  Training Team

The course is instructed by a team of experienced CNRRI scientists: (The names are listed in alphabetical order.)

  CAO Liyong

  Ph. D., Hybrid Rice Breeder

Mr. Cao engages in breeding of CMS lines, restorer and maintainer lines and development of parental lines designated to develop indica hybrid combinations. He has bred and released several high-yielding rice hybrid varieties with good grain quality and modest resistance to diseases.

  CHENG Shihua

  Ph.D., Hybrid Rice Breeder

Mr. Cheng is the Principal Scientist of China National Super Rice Program and a hybrid rice breeder at CNRRI. He masterminded the pioneering paradigm shift from hybrid rice breeding to super rice breeding. Application of techniques to change rice breeders’ attitudes and thoughts in China led to significant improvement of yield and grain quality of hybrid rice.

Mr. Cheng has a Ph.D. degree in hybrid rice genetics and breeding from Nanjing Agricultural University, China (2000) and a M.S. degree with a distinctive mark in rice genetics and breeding (1986) from South China Agricultural University. Mr. Cheng mainly engages in breeding and crop genetics of rice hybrids and presides numerous national and provincial key projects. He has developed several super rice varieties (combinations), such as Guodao No.1 and Guodao No.3 through a strategy of indica/japonica hybridization.

  LI Ximing

Ph. D., Rice Breeder & Geneticist

Mr. Li concentrates on genetics of pest resistance, mapping and characterization of resistant genes and development of high-yielding, good quality, pests and diseases resistant rice varieties. Ten new rice varieties have been developed and released passing national and provincial trials under his leadership.

  ZHANG Shanqing

  Rice Breeder & Geneticist

Mr. Zhang’s main research interests lie in breeding of new plant type rice hybrids, high quality hybrids, development of high quality CMS lines and two-line sterile lines via molecular markers. He has developed CMS line Zhongzhe A and new hybrid combinations including Zhongzheyou No. 1, Zhongzheyou No. 8 and Zhongzheyou 2838 that are welcomed by rice farmers.

  ZHU Xudong

  Rice Breeder & Geneticist

Mr. Zhu is an expert for two-line hybrid rice focusing on rice breeding and genetics. He has developed five inbred rice varieties, one hybrid combination and one CMS line with over 30 research articles being published.
