Education Background
Cheng Shihua, a famous super rice breeding specialist in China, received his BSc degree (1982) in Crop Genetics and Breeding from Zhejiang Agricultural University, China, his MSc degree (1986) in Crop Genetics and Breeding from South China Agricultural University, China and his PhD degree in Crop Genetics and Breeding (2000) from Nanjing Agricultural University, China.
Research Area
He is the Director General of CNRRI, Director of the Chinese National Center for Rice Improvement and the leader of Super Rice Breeding Innovation Research Team of CNRRI. He has been working on rice genetics and breeding for over 30 years, focusing on theoretical study of rice heterosis and super rice breeding. He has been awarded five National Prizes for Technology Innovation, Scientific and Technological Progress and Natural Science and 10 Provincial/Ministerial Prizes for Science and Technology Progress. He has developed 18 hybrid rice varieties, got 12 rice variety rights and 5 patents authorized in China, and published more than100 scientific papers.
He is Chinese Permanent Representative of International Rice Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Council for Partnership in Rice Research in Asia (CORRA), He is the Chief Editor of Rice Science, and Chinese Journal of Rice Science. He served as the coordinator & Chief Scientist of a number of major national rice research projects including “Breeding and Demonstration of Super Rice” (2001-Now), “Research on Breeding Materials and Breeding Methodology in Hybrid Rice”(1996-2000), etc.
