FED：a web tool for foreign element detection of genome-edited organism

Recently, researchers from China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Institute of Genetics and Development Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly reported a web tool named Foreign Element Detector (FED) for foreign element detection of genome-edited organism.

The C2H2 zinc-finger protein LACKING RUDIMENTARY GLUME 1 regulates spikelet development in rice

Recently, CNRRI scientists cloned a novel regulatory factor involved in spikelet development, lacking rudimentary glume 1 (lrg1) and revealed the mechanism by which lrg1 regulates spikelet organ identity and grain size.

A strigolactones biosynthesis gene contributed to the Green Revolution in rice

CNRRI scientists have identified a beneficial allele of the strigolactone biosynthesis gene, HIGH TILLERING AND DWARF 1 (HTD1^HZ), which was found to be co-selected with the beneficial allele of Semidwarf 1 (SD1^DGWG) by breeders during Green Revolution. By unveiling the underlying molecular mechanism of dwarf and high tillering, researchers have disclosed for the first time how HTD1, originally from the milestone variety of the rice Green Revolution, IR8, and its parent Peta, exists widely in most IR8 derived or other associated high tillering and dwarf indica varieties.

Natural variation in the promoter of TGW2 determines grain width and weight in rice

Recently, a paper entitled “Natural variation in the promoter of TGW2 determines grain width and weight in rice” was published online by New Phytologist. In the paper, CNRRI researchers report the cloning and characterization of a new semidominant QTL TGW2 for grain width and weight. Findings provide new insights into the genetic mechanism underlying grain morphology and grain weight, and uncover a promising gene for improving rice yield.

Production of novel beneficial alleles of a riceyield-related QTL by CRISPR/Cas9

Breeding high yielding crop cultivars is an effective way to improve agronomic performance for key grain crops. Traditional breeding taks years since it mainly depends on natural variation and breeder's knowledge. Kindled bymolecular technique and increased amount of genomic information, genetic dissection of beneficial trait-associated genes in elite cultivar was proved to be a good induction for future predictable breeding. Recently, a paper entitled "Production of novel beneficial alleles of a riceyield-related QTL by CRISPR/Cas9" published on Plant Biotechnology Journal from researchers of CNRRI reported production of novel beneficial alleles of a rice yield-related QTL, with which culm strength and panicle size can be optimized.In this study, three quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with stem cross section area (SCSA) were firstly detected by using 127 chromosome substitution segments lines (CSSLs) derived from the offspring of 9311 crossed with Nipponbare and previous bin map made by these researchers. Fine-mapping and genomic complementary confirmed that qSCSA3-1 is allelic to SCM3/OsTB1 and has pleiotropic effects.

Development of nutritious rice with high zinc/selenium and low cadmium in grains through QTL pyramiding

Enriching zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) levels, while reducing cadmium (Cd) concentration in rice grains is of great benefit for human diets and health. The large natural variations in grain Zn, Se and Cd concentrations in different rice accessions enable Zn/Se biofortification and Cd minimization through molecular breeding. Recently, a paper entitled “Development of nutritious rice with high zinc/selenium and low cadmium in grains through QTL pyramiding” published on Journal of Integrative Plant Biology from the Germplasm Innovation research group of CNRRI reported that the development of new elite varieties by pyramiding major QTLs that significantly contribute to high Zn/Se and low Cd accumulation in grains.
