Progress on Genetic Mechanism of Water Loss in Rice

The global problem of drought threatens agricultural production and constrains the development of sustainable agricultural practices. In plants, excessive water loss causes drought stress and induces early senescence. Severe water shortages restrict the expansion of rice production and hinder the irrigation of existing paddy fields.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) in China contains two major subspecies: the short grain japonica variety, and the long-grain indica variety. With the opening of the rice market, customers nowadays are paying more attention to not only the rice flavor but the grain appearance also, which is a major quality parameter determined by grain size and endosperm translucency.

Dissection of Molecular Mechanism of a Long-term Interaction between Fungi and Plants

The genus Zizania belongs to the rice tribe (Oryzeae) of the grass family Poaceae and is the closest genus to rice (Oryza sativa). Two members of the genus Zizania have been domesticated -- the annual Z. palustris, which is native to North America and is called “wild rice” as a grain crop, and the perennial Z. latifolia, which is native to Asia and called “Jiaobai” as a vegetable crop.

Partial Mutation of the Synaptonemal Complex Component Increases the Genetic Recombination Frequency in Rice

Genetic recombination results in novel allele combinations and is the most important genetic phenomenon for generating variation in breeding populations. However, in most organisms, the number of genetic recombinations is tightly constrained, which hampers the introgression of new genetic traits and limits genetic variation during agricultural breeding.

Past week saw the release of 2014 National Award for Progress in Science and Technology. The project “Application of the Key Cultivation Techniques of Super Rice and Its Regionalized Integration for High Yield” led by Professor Zhu Defeng’s research team of China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) won the 2014 second award.
